2007-2008 Shelter Season:

During the past winter season Operation H.O.P.E. fed, housed, and provided case management for 31 families and 121 individuals (64 adults and 57 children). Women were the heads of household for more than three-quarters of the families served. All families that participated in the program and case management were placed in transitional housing, found a permanent residence, or were reunited with family before the seasonal closure of the shelter.

In the spring of 2007, after the seasonal closing, volunteers from North Coast Church spent a weekend revitalizing and improving the shelter. New cubicles were constructed, shelving installed, walls and ceilings were painted, the kitchen floor received a coat of epoxy, the entryway was insulated and strengthened, and the showers were repaired and enhanced. More work is planned on the showers and plumbing in preparation for the 08 – 09 season.

The shelter historically had a capacity of 50 people with rooms for 17 families. Before the shelter opened for the 07 – 08 season, the City of Vista approved admission of single homeless women to the Shelter. This action was taken due to an increasing request for shelter by single women and made possible by the renovation.

To improve family cubicles, Chase Conk built rolling bins that fit under the beds or shelves as his Eagle Scout project. These additions provide a way for residents to store their personal belongings and maintain a sense of order in the limited space available. Chase was just 16 when he completed the project and is a student at Vista High School.  His Scout troop is from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

These volunteers did a wonderful job in providing a substantial facelift for the building and making our residents more comfortable. THANK YOU!
